The Federal Tax Service of Russia began to take interest in owners of cryptocurrencies. Should we pay taxes on "crypto"?

The website "Soba.ru" published an article about the fact that the Federal Tax Service of Russia began to check the owners of cryptocurrencies. The control measures are carried out in order to identify citizens who received income from transactions with cryptocurrencies, but did not pay taxes.

It is expected that the check will affect not only large owners of cryptocurrencies, but also ordinary citizens who conducted transactions with small amounts. In addition, the Russian Federal Tax Service will ask banks for information on customer transactions with cryptocurrencies.

According to the Federal Tax Service of Russia, the tax on income from transactions with cryptocurrencies is 13%. However, most owners do not pay taxes because the transactions take place outside the banking system. In this regard, the Federal Tax Service decided to start an inspection to force citizens to pay taxes in accordance with the law.

"The situation with the taxation of crypto-assets now can be described as follows: nothing is regulated, but taxes have to be paid. It is not necessary to declare the crypto-assets themselves. But it is necessary to declare income from their sale.

The obligation to pay personal income tax from cryptocurrency trading appears at the moment of sale of cryptocurrency on the exchange for fiat currency (rubles, dollars, euros), and expenses for acquisition are recorded at the moment of transfer of fiat currencies into digital currency.

Moreover, the tax code allows you to reduce income from the sale of cryptocurrency by the amount of documented expenses related to its acquisition when determining the tax base. To put it simply, if you bought a cryptocurrency for 9,000 rubles, and then sold it for 10,000 rubles thanks to a favorable exchange rate, you only have to pay taxes on the thousand.

As documentary evidence of expenses will be suitable contracts for the purchase of cryptocurrency, downloads from a personal account on cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets, can be a notarized inspection of the website, bank statements, calculations, reports, etc.

Tax authorities may obtain information on transactions with cryptocurrency from Russian banks, Rosfinmonitoring, and then send a request to the taxpayer to provide an explanation of such transactions. And the practice of sending such requests is rapidly gaining momentum", said Evgeniya Zainchukovskaya, senior tax consultant at Tax Compliance.
